DISPUR, Assam: A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Guwahati developed an optimisation-based voltage control solution to facilitate the coordinated operation of solar power generation and electric vehicle charging stations.
To derive maximum benefits from renewable power generation and electric vehicle power sourcing, coordination among the power distribution networks is a must, and the newly developed system aims to facilitate this coordination.
However, the sustainability of EVs can be achieved only if the power used to charge EVs comes from renewable energy sources like solar energy. But the solar energy production is not stable, which causes voltage fluctuations in the distribution networks. Also, an uncoordinated approach between the distribution networks leads to a loss of energy and efficiency.
According to the statement of IIT-G, the research team has produced a three-staged model predictive control (MPC) system. This new model facilitates coordination of the volt-tar devices at two different time scales and reception of the reactive power setpoints by the local-level controller. The model also involves scheduling EV charging as per the balance between the operating cost and consumer satisfaction.
This new three-stage model also allows maintaining bus voltage magnitude and state-of-charge (SOC) of EV battery within prescribed limits with minimal usage of control resources, thus reducing the cost of electricity consumption. It also provides ample scope for transition from passive power distribution to an active one.
