MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) asked experts on its panel to find alternative routes before they start demolition work of the 18 bridges. In an audit report of 296 BMC bridges, it was stated that 18 bridges have to be razed as the condition of these bridges are beyond repair. Demolition of bridges will be arranged after the alternate routes are planned as the BMC wants to ensure minimum inconvenience.

“Currently, the bridges are not dangerous. A detailed timetable will be prepared to cause minimum inconvenience while the bridges are being demolished” said a senior civic official.

The tenders will be passed only when the consultants will submit a plan to the chief engineer which will include preparation of General Administrative Drawings (GAD), estimated cost, and also the alternate routes.

According to the audit report, Out of 18 bridges, three bridges are already knocked down which includes the Tilak Nagar Bridge in Chembur, Gandhi Nagar Bridge in Malad and Yellow Gate FoB in Masjid (East). Planning is still going on for the remaining 15 bridges.

The report also mentions about 61 bridges that need major repairs and 107 bridges that need minor repairs. The official further added that most of the bridges are pedestrian bridges and will not cause major traffic disruption.
