NEW DELHI: A report released by the World Resources Institute (WRI) stated that India is currently facing the triple challenge of post-pandemic revival, pushing for equitable development, and addressing climate threats. During WRI’s annual flagship event, Connect Karo, the session on ‘Mainstreaming Climate Action in Indian Cities’ highlighted the ways to make the Indian cities more sustainable, inclusive and climate forward.

The experts in the session highlighted that India is one of the countries which are most vulnerable to climate change events in the coming years. WRI, during the session, released a report titled ‘Seizing the Urban Opportunity’, which highlighted the role of national governments in recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Daniel Bradley, Team Leader, British High Commission, said that climate change is prerequisite for future growth and we need to take collective responsibility in order to tackle this. He added that this will be an even bigger challenge for India as 22 out of the 30 most polluted cities in the world are in India.

The report released by WRI highlighted the challenges faced by six growing economies, including China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. The report added that these six countries accounted for one-third of the global GDP (Gross Domestic Product), 41 per cent of Carbon Dioxide emissions, and 42 per cent of the world’s urban population.
