NEW DELHI: Green area will increase up to three times after the redevelopment of South Delhi government colonies, housing, and urban affairs ministry claimed on Thursday citing official data. The current 3.83 lakh sqm green area will increase to 10.69 lakh sqm in these parts of south Delhi because redevelopment will reduce ground coverage area from 50 per cent to 15-20 per cent.

The housing ministry has decided to manage the redevelopment of seven colonies – Nauroji Nagar, Netaji Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Mohammadpur, Sriniwaspuri, Kasturba Nagar and Thyagaraj Nagar. It will be helpful to increase the rate of official accommodation to government employees.

The ministry said they will plant more and more trees in the colonies and also manage a compensatory plantation in the ratio of 1:10, which will increase the green area coverage in Delhi.

The ministry’s claims came the day there were reports of green activists planning a major signature campaign against felling of trees for these major infrastructure projects.
