GoI releases 648 crores as flood relief for Assam

DISPUR, Assam: The Government of India has released a relief package worth Rs 648.80 crore in 2022-23, as disaster assistance for Assam. As per the reports, 197 people have lost their lives during the recent flood incidents in Assam.

Nityanand, Rai, Minister of State for Home, Government of India, while addressing the Rajya Sabha, said that during the south-west monsoon in 2022, landslides and floods have caused great damage in nearly all the districts of the state. He told the house that 197 people have died due to recent incidents of floods and landslides, and the state administration has set up 4075 relief camps and 5802 relief material distribution centres to help the needy citizens.

He added that the central government had already constituted an Inter-Ministerial Centre Team (IMCT) on May 18, without waiting for the memorandum from the state government.   The newly constituted IMCT conducted the flood ravaged Assam twice, once between May 26 to 29 and on July 30 to 3 for the second time.

Rai said that the responsibility to distribute the allocated fund lies on the shoulder of the state government. As per the written response of the minister, “The central government has released both the instalments of the State Disaster Response Fund of the year 2022-23, totalling Rs 648.80 crore, in advance, to help the state government to provide relief to the affected people.”
