ROME: As world see a rise in awareness about the climate change among children’s, Italy has taken steps to become the first country in the world to teach its youth about the climate change in schools. On November 5, Lorenzo Fioramonti, Education Minister announced that all schools in Italy will dedicate an hour every week on issues related to climate change and sustainability. The changes will come into effect from the following year.

The new subject will be taught from grade one to grade 13, from students of age six to 19 said Lorenzo.

The syllabus will be in line with United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including how to live more sustainably, how to combat the pollution related issues and how to address poverty and social injustice.

In September 2019, the world saw protests driven by young children, where millions of school children around the world took part in ‘Friday for the Future march’.

“Italy will be the first country in the world to adopt this framework,” Fioramonti said.
