Bengaluru to get India’s first e-waste plant

BENGALURU: India’s first e-waste recycling plant is going to be set up in Bengaluru, Union minister of Chemical and Fertilizer Ananth Kumar said recently.  The plant is going to be set up by the ministry, and is likely to be ready in four months, and is in keeping with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, said Ananth Kumar.

India’s e-waste generation is rising and it estimated to reach 52 lakh tones in 2020, indicating in increased requirements for e-waste recycling plants.

A 2016 study by KPMG and ASSOCHAM ranked India among the top five countries in e-waste generation and it was estimated that India generates 1.85 million tons of e-waste annually. According to study, among the total e-waste generated 70 per cent waste comprised of computers and 12 per cent e-waste comprised of telecommunication equipments. Bengaluru was ranked third after Mumbai and Delhi, and generate nearly 92,000 tons of e-waste annually.
