AIZAWAL, Mizoram: The northeastern states, including Mizoram, have been struck by Cyclone Remal, resulting in heavy rain and thunderstorms that have caused at least 37 deaths and left dozens missing.
Hundreds of people have been displaced, seeking shelter in relief camps after the rain destroyed homes and power lines.
Mizoram has been particularly affected, with the state government reporting 27 deaths in various areas of the capital Aizwal. The death toll is expected to increase as search and rescue operations continue.
Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, has announced a State Disaster Relief Fund and ex gratia for the deceased.
Furthermore, Assam and Nagaland have also experienced casualties and significant damage due to the cyclone, with heavy rainfall and strong winds causing fatalities and destruction in the both states.
