NEW DELHI: A statement from a private facility in Delhi said that doctors are seeing a rise in the number of COVID-19 triggered mucormycisis cases. It is a fungal infection which is triggered by the novel coronavirus and has been a cause of disease and death of patients in transplants, Intensive Care units (ICUs) and immunodeficient patients.

Dr Manish Munjal, Senior ENT Surgeon, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said that the doctors are seeing a steep rise in the dangerous fungal infection triggered by COVID-19. He added that in the last two days, six cases of mucormycisis have been admitted.

Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, ENT Department, also said that the use of steroids in the treatment of COVID-19 with the fact that many COVID-19 patients have diabetes can be a reason for the increase in the cases of black fungus again. This type of infection is commonly visible in the patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, kidney or heart failure or cancer.

Dr Manjul said that the COVID-19 patients with a weak immunity are more prone to this deadly infection.
