HYDERABAD: The Yuvajan Sramika Rythu (YSR) Congress, led by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Jagan Mohan Reddy, has swept the local body polls in the state. The party has won close to 90 per cent of the Mandal Parishads Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) and 99 per cent of the Zila Parishads Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs).
The elections were held on April 8 for a total of 515 ZPTCs and 7,220 MPTCs and the results were scheduled to be released on April 10, but Andhra Pradesh High Court stopped the counting due to petitions filed by the Telugu Desam Party, Bharatiya Janata Party, and others. The petition held that the mandatory period of Model Code of Conduct was not taken seriously from the date of announcement of polls.
The YSR Congress won a total of 74 out of the total 75 municipalities and nagar panchayats in the state and also swept all of the 12 municipal corporations which went to polls. The party credited this win to the welfare initiatives taken by the state government and also cited the continuous efforts made for women, backward communities and minorities in the state.
