NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday, November 18 announced that his government has prepared a six-point plan to clean Yamuna river by February 2025. He stated that the Government of NCR Delhi plans to clean Yamuna river to “bathing standards”.
Under this plan, new sewage treatment plants will be built and the capacity of existing ones will be increased from 600 million gallons of water waste a day to 750 MGD-800 MGD.
The existing wastewater networks established in the Yamuna- Najafgarh, Badshahpur, and Ghazipur, will also be expanded and new sewer connections will be constructed.
This sewer network will also curb the issue of wastewater from slums flowing into the Yamuna through the stormwater drains. The authorities will also provide household connections in areas that have a sewer network. Furthermore, these sewer networks will also be desilted and rehabilitated.
Kejriwal clarified that it took 70 years for the river Yamuna to become this polluted. Hence, it’s cleansing project cannot be cleared within 2 days. However, he vowed that the river will get cleaned up till the time the next poll comes around. He further assured that the operations of the project will be personally monitored by him.
