KOLKATA: Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister, West Bengal, has issued a strict warning against the dumping of construction materials and garbage on roads and pavements. Banerjee urged Firhad Hakim, Mayor, Kolkata, to penalize the offenders. During a virtual administrative meeting held at Nabanna on Tuesday, August 25, Banerjee said that the drainage systems are getting choked because of these construction materials and garbage dumped on pavements and also near food stalls, resulting in waterlogging during the monsoon showers. These puddles become potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes and dengue threat, she added.
Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and other municipal bodies have been directed by the Chief Minister to organize a cleanliness drive and book the offenders. Banerjee has also asked the urban development department to locate the canals under municipalities and take up the cleanliness job and release the guppy fish in canals and ponds as feed on mosquitoes’ larva.
