MARGAO: Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, Minister for Waste Management, Government of Goa has said that the garbage problem of Sonsoddo will be resolved by a proposed waste management project within 12-18 months. The Minister was visiting the garbage treatment plant at Sonsoddo on Tuesday, where he listened to a presentation by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC). He told the reporters afterwards that two biodigesters of 25 tonnes per day capacity will be installed in Sonsoddo.
Providing details of the roadmap for the project, Levinson Martins, Managing Director, GWMC said that most of the legacy waste of Sonsoddo will be bio-remediated before the onset of monsoons. The area thus cleared (3000 square meter) will be used for setting up of two biodigesters. Meanwhile, the daily incoming waste will be treated inside the plant by windrows composting method.
Waste accumulation and increasing legacy dump had been a long-standing issue in Sonsoddo for which the Margao Municipal Corporation (MMC) had been struggling to find a solution. Now, the GWMC has stepped in to resolve the issue in collaboration with MMC. While bio-remediation will be done by GWMC, the waste from inside the plant will be disposed by MMC. Digambar Kama, MLA, Margao has said that GWMC’s Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be released by May 15, which will provide more clarity on the project.
