VARANASI: Varanasi has decided to go for green energy with NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) by installing a “Waste to Energy” (WTE) plant for producing electricity from municipal waste. In order to construct this WTE plant, Varanasi Nagar Nigam has allocated 20 acres of land.
In order to achieve sustainable development goals, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, has signed an agreement with the Varanasi Nagar Nigam for setting up the WTE plant worth Rs 180 crore. The agreement was signed on Friday, November 12, between NVVN authority and Dushyant Kumar, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Varanasi Nagar Nigam.
The plant will help in the mitigation of environmental hazards caused by solid waste and also form clean surroundings in order to contribute to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Swachh Bharat. The plan which is to be constructed under the project will have waste segregation capacity of 600-800 tons per day. The waste will be processed and fed into the reactor to produce torrefied charcoal.
