KOZHIKADE: Vadakara Municipality of the city of Kozhikode became the first zero-waste local body in Kerala. M V Govindan, Minister of Local Self-Governments, Government of Kerala, making the declaration of the same on Saturday, October 2, said that Vadakara model should be an inspiration for the whole state to achieve zero-waste status within the next five years.

Vadakara Municipality has earned various awards for waste management. The place is widely known in the state for its out-of-the-box efforts in ensuring proper segregation and disposal of waste, including recycling and upcycling of waste. The Municipality had come up with a hygiene protocol a few months ago which played a major role in it achieving the zero-waste status. Moreover, the ‘Hariyali Haritha Karma Sena’ of the municipality has developed into a green consultancy, which now gives technical guidance to other local bodies because of its expertise in the field of waste management and upcycling.
