Urban India worried about unemployment, COVID-19: Survey

NEW DELHI: As per the Ipsos’s ‘What worries the World’ global monthly survey, urban population of India is still worried about unemployment and the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey shows that 42 per cent of the people cited them as their primary concern.

Amit Adarkar, Chief Executive Officer, Ipsos India, said that the results show a 2% increase in the worry levels for unemployment from last month outcomes whereas a dip of 5% for the COVID-19 pandemic. He added that the spread of pandemic and resultant lockdowns hit the job market but even after the reopening of economy, the unemployment woes have not vanished.

India has been witnessing the drop in fresh cases of COVID-19 due to a surge in vaccination. However, the effects are still visible on several industries such as tourism, hospitality, aviation, etc. India was ranked the second most optimistic market with almost 65% urban Indians saying that the country is moving at the right direction. Saudi Arabia retains the title for most optimistic market (90%), according to the survey.

Adarkar also said that Indians are resilient bunch and despite spread of tensions across the world, they face the problems and do not let their spirits flag. The survey is conducted in 28 countries through online panel system of Ipsos.
