LUCKNOW: The UP Solid Waste Monitoring Management Committee (UPSWMMC) of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has given a 15-day deadline to LMC for cleaning the banks of Gomti river. NGT will impose a fine for polluting the environment on LMC if failed to comply with the directions.
The 15-km-long stretch along the Gomti is swamped with garbage. Earlier, the committee had given three days to LMC to clean the banks. After expressing inability to finish the work within the given time duration due to lack of manpower, the committee extended the deadline to 15 days.
During a meeting with Indramani Tripathi, Municipal Commissioner, the UPSWMMC chairman DP Tripathi said that LMC would impose Rs 500 penalty for littering the river’s banks. “We have sought help from the Lucknow Development Authority and State Irrigation Department for the work. We will install dustbins near the banks and also send our sanitary staff to collect garbage. We will punish those people caught throwing garbage in the open,” Tripathi said.
