NEW DELHI: The Cabinet of Government of India on July 3, approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement. It now incorporates Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Panchamrit’ strategy that he had announced at the Glasgow conference.

The updated NDC stated that India now stands committed to reducing emissions intensity of its GDP by 45 per cent by 2030 from the level of 2005, and also achieving about 50 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030. In a bid to facilitate healthy and sustainable lifestyle, ‘LIFE’, which is ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ has been added to the NDC.

The NDC consists of national plans and pledges made by a country to meet the goal of maintaining global temperature increases to well below 2 degree Celsius above the pre-industrial levels to avoid the bring about of worst impacts of climate change. The updated NDC is meant to be implemented over the 2021-2030, period through various programmes and schemes of relevant ministries and departments, with the help of states. It seeks to enhance India’s contributions towards the achievement of the strengthening of global response to the threat of climate change, as was agreed in the Paris Agreement.
