LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh: The Government of Uttar Pradesh (UP) will be conducting an aquifer mapping and management study in four cities to ascertain the status of groundwater and water bodies. The survey will be carried out in the major cities- Jhansi, Rampur, Rae Bareilly, and Banda to find out the status of groundwater.
The survey is being initiated under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) mission to help the governing civic bodies of the four cities to prepare the city water balance and city water action plans.
The objective of this survey is to fulfill 20 per cent of the city water demand through treated or recycled water. Within the urban aquifer systems, the groundwater balance is going to be studied to find out the variations over the past two to three decades.
Subrata Chakraborty, Senior Programme Manager (water) at the Centre for Science and Environment, said, “We are going to find out the new and old tap connections within the four cities, the timing of supply, and the quantity of water being supplied. Water bearing formations will be also surveyed and examined to find out the stress level on the aquifers.”
