UP local body elections: BJP wins all mayoral seats

LUCKNOW: Bharatiya Janata Party swept away all the mayoral posts in UP municipal elections. 17 mayors and 1,401 corporators were elected in two rounds of voting for the urban local bodies, which were held on May 4 and May 11. According to the State Election Commission, 19 corporators were elected without opposition.

Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath announced that the BJP has won all 17 municipal corporations for the first time at a news conference held at the party’s headquarters. Voters in all 17 local corporations have put their trust in the BJP, he claimed. The chief minister said that the BJP doubled its seat total from 2017, when it won 60, in the 199 out of 200 municipal council elections.

4.32 crore people participated in the two-day municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh in two phases on May 4 and May 11, electing 1,420 corporators to Municipal Corporations, 5,327 members to Nagar Panchayats, and 7,177 members to Nagar Palikar Parishads. While only 52 per cent of eligible voters participated in phase 1 of the election, more than 50 per cent participated in phase 2.
