LUCKNOW: Under the direction of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath, a month-long special drive for road safety was carried out in the state from May 19 to June 15. Approximately 9342 vehicle owners were handed with fine for drunk driving, while around 9728 drivers in the state were arrested under different offences during the drive. 18,119 challans were issued in the state for over-speeding and Rs 68,87,3000 has been collected from the drivers as fine. Moreover, in 16 cases, 31 traffic personnel were identified in this period for taking bribe and nine cases have been registered under zero tolerance policy.
The drive involved officials working from the Departments of Police, Transport, Information, Traffic, Education, Urban Development, Medical Education, and Home Department of the state. The Government of Uttar Pradesh released a statement mentioning all the works accomplished under the drive.
It was reported that a total of 1431 illegal tempo stands were removed and 76,196 spots identified for encroachment on road were vacated and reclaimed. Moreover, 3433 illegal parking spots were removed across the state. The police department lodged around 9300 cases during the drive. Under the foot patrolling by the police personnel, 2927 illegal arms and 2333 illegal vehicles were found and seized. Awanish Kumar Awasthi, Additional Chief Secretary to Government of Uttar Pradesh, said that under the drive, Goonda Act was imposed on 123 people and Gangsters Act on two people. The PWD department also identified around 752 black spots and worked to improve the transport situation there.
