UP government inked MoU with CSE to cut down pollution level

LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh: The Department of Urban Development, Government of Uttar Pradesh, inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) on Wednesday, September 8, to reduce pollution levels in the state.

CSE, a Delhi-based research organisation, will help the urban local bodies (ULBs) in Uttar Pradesh to cut down air and water pollution levels in the state.

A government spokesperson noted that ULBs situated in industrial towns like Ghaziabad, Agra, Moradabad, Kanpur and Aligarh would collaborate with the organisation to take measures for the remediation of effluents and wastewater.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), out of 734 towns and cities under the jurisdiction of the ULBs, only 31 have partial sewage system coverage with a capacity to tackle around 40 per cent of the generated sewage waste.

An official from CSE said that beast practices that are being implemented in Odisha would be shared with the officials of the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary, Department of Urban Development, noted, “Since the programme and workshop is extremely important, executive heads of more than 200 local bodies have been asked to remain present while the remaining ones will join the proceedings virtually on Wednesday.”

Following the MoU signing, a day-long workshop will be organised on improving urban schemes that are being implemented in the state.
