Union Cabinet approves metro project in Agra and Kanpur

AGRA: Under the chairmanship of Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, the Union Cabinet cleared two corridors for the Agra Metro Rail Project on March 1, 2019. The project costs Rs 8,379.62 crore and is estimated to be completed by 2024. Along 29.4 km stretch in the city a total of 27 stations will be built.

The Agra Metro Rail Project will give a major boost to the urban public transport connectivity in Agra, said the officials of Agra Development Authority (ADA). 

The two corridors will link major public nodes, tourist places and city cluster areas of Agra city. About 20 lakh residents of the city is expected to reap the benefits of the Metro Rail Project. 

The Union Cabinet on February 28, 2019, also approved the Metro projects for Kanpur. It further decided that the ‘Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC)’, a company owned by the Government of India and Government of Uttar Pradesh on 50 per cent partnership basis will be reconstituted as ‘Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC)’. It will have all the responsibility for time-bound implementation of Agra Metro Rail Project. The government has already allocated Rs 175 crore each for Metro projects in the two cities. The Centre’s approval will clear the route for more funds for the projects.
