NEW DELHI: In his New Year’s message, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged people to make a recovery resolution “for people, planet, and prosperity” for 2022. He remarked that the world welcomes 2022 with hopes which are being tested by rising poverty and worsening inequality. Some of the key obstacles, he said, include climate commitments that fall short, as well as continuous violence, division, and misinformation around the world.
He also stated that these are “moral and real-life tests,” rather than “policy tests.” These are tests that the entire world can pass if everyone commits to make 2022, a year of recovery for all. Guterres went on to explain best ways to proceed with the recovery on each front. He went on to say that the pandemic necessitates a bold strategy to vaccinate everyone, everywhere. In order to save the global economy, the UN chief stated that wealthier countries must assist developing countries with funding, investment, and debt reduction. Meanwhile, he underlined that a new emphasis on science, facts, and reason is needed to heal the wounds of mistrust and division.
