KOCHI, Kerala: The Kerala High Court, in its order, has highlighted that local bodies are also responsible for disposing illegally dumped waste on private land. Along with this order, Justice P Gopinath directed the Thrikkakara municipality to remove the waste dumped on Kochi Metro Rail Limited’s (KMRL) land.
The court observed that the local bodies cannot shrug away the responsibility of disposing waste from private land. Civic bodies should treat the waste in the same manner as they treat other municipal waste.
This court order came in response to the complaint of Mohammed Mannat Ibrahim, a local resident who approached the court seeking instructions to remove garbage from the land owned by KMRL near the NGO quarters on the Thrikkakara-Mavelipuram road.
KMRL attempted to build a fence around the land to prevent waste dumping, but local residents opposed it. On the other hand, the municipality said it is not responsible for disposing of the waste from KMRL’s land.
