TIRUCHIRAPPALLI, Tamil Nadu: The Tiruchirappalli Municipal Corporation has floated a request for proposal (RFP) to identify an agency to conduct the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of a proposal to build a private bus stand in the city with the capacity to accommodate 100 long distance buses.

The Tiruchirappalli Corporation will select an agency from the proposals received to conduct EIA on July 12. Once selected, the agency will have one month to submit its report according to the guidelines of the World Bank.

As per the Detailed Project Report (DPR) prepared by the corporation, the proposed bus station will cost ₹18.7 crore. It will have the capacity to accommodate about 100 long distance buses. Supporting infrastructure, such as commercial outlets, will also be constructed along with the bus station. The civic body is working to secure funds for the city’s first government-operated private bus stand.

Currently, there is no dedicated omnibus stand for the buses operated from the city to Chennai, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Puducherry, and Thiruvananthapuram. Since there is no bus stand, buses are parked on VOC Road, Rockins Road, and Williams Road near the central bus terminal. Apart from catering to the long distance buses, the bus stand will also benefit the buses arriving from Madurai and other districts going to Chennai.
