CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu: The Government of Tamil Nadu has issued orders to upgrade Pudukkottai, Namakkal, Tiruvannamalai, and Karaikudi municipalities into municipal corporations. The decision to upgrade these civic bodies is in line with the announcement made by Minister KN Nehru in the state assembly last year.
For upgrading Pudukkottai Municipality, the territory of the civic body will be merged with 11 neighbouring villages. For the creation of Tiruvannamalai Municipal Corporation, the area of Tiruvannamalai civic body will be merged with 18 village panchayats.
Similarly, Namakkal Municipality and 12 village panchayats will be merged to form Namakkal Municipal Corporation. Karaikudi Municipal Corporation will be formed after merging two town panchayats with Karaikudi civic body.
The official order released in this regard read, “The new Municipal Corporations will be established by following the procedures laid down under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998.”
At present, there are 20 municipal corporations in the state.
