THANJAVUR: The Municipal Corporation of Thanjavur have been inducting battery operated vehicles into their solid waste management exercise fleet. In the first phase of their project, the corporation added 30 battery operated vehicles under the smart city project.
The officials said, the vehicles have a capacity of carrying up to 750 kg of load, and will be used to collect garbage and other solid waste from households and other commercial establishments in the districts. The waste collected will then be transported to multi-purpose waste segregation centers which are to be set up at 14 places under the civic body.
Each battery operated vehicle can operate for about eight hours on single charge, the battery used in vehicles will require about five hours to charge fully and the vehicles have a maximum speed of 70 km/hr.
