Telangana to focus on green buildings; encourage sustainable practices among students

HYDERABAD, Telangana: The Government of Telangana has planned to establish Swacch Badis in 141 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to continue its efforts to adopt green practices and to promote the importance of sustainable practices among the students.

While inaugurating India’s first Green Property show at Hitex in Hyderabad, KT Rama Rao, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD), Government of Telangana, said that these schools would help students learn about waste to energy, energy-efficient practices, and other initiatives, making them conscious about green contributions towards saving the environment. “Telangana Government is pleased to be a state partner with the Confederation of Indian Industry – Indian Green Building Council (CII – IGBC) to host India’s first Green Property Show, promoting green homes, buildings, and products,” he said.

The minister highlighted the initiatives taken by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao to support green initiatives in the state and said that the nation’s first green building, green home, green airport, green railway station, and green factory building—all these structures exist in Telangana.

He further added that the state government has already implemented sustainability measures in new hospitals, industrial parks, and IT towers, which would also be green-certified. “Not just buildings and campuses, our cities, Hyderabad, Warangal, Khammam, and Karimnagar are already adopting the IGBC Green Cities rating. I am sure our cities will set a world-class benchmark for all the other cities adopting sustainable principles,” he said.

Regarding the state’s flagship programme Haritha Haram, Rao said that the programme aided in increasing the green cover by 7.7 per cent in the state with support from CII-IGBC through large-scale plantation drives.

He stated, “The focus is also on promoting green principles in rural areas, with Gangadevipally village in Warangal being the first to achieve the IGBC Green Village Platinum rating, inspiring other villages to adopt sustainable practices. At least 1,000 villages in Telangana will follow in the footsteps of Gangadevipally in ensuring more green villages.”

Regarding Green Affordable Housing in Telangana, Rao stated that the state government has always placed a high priority on sustainable economic growth and is implementing a multifaceted strategy to take this agenda forward. Telangana’s urban population will soon exceed the 50 per cent mark and the state government is making efforts to transform the state capital, Hyderabad, into a global city through various programmes and initiatives, the minister added.
