HYDERABAD: As compared to September-2019 mark, September-2020 has shown an increase in the level of groundwater in Telangana. Almost all the districts of Telangana have recorded an increase in the levels of groundwater, except Adilabad which showed a negligible decrease of 0.06m. The average groundwater level of the state, is around 5.38m below ground level (bgl), in September-2020.

Shallow water levels which are less than 5m bgl is evident in around 56 per cent of the state which covers Adilabad, Jagityal, Warangal, Karimnagar, etc. The Groundwater Department of the state has measured these levels in September-2020 wit the help of 963 Piezometers (monitoring stations).  Maximum rise of 11.68m was monitored in the district of Mahabubnagar and the minimum rise of 0.46m was seen in Mancherial district.

This year, Telangana has seen a large amount of rainfall (1078.3mm), against the normal rainfall of 720.4mm in September. This almost 50 per cent increase in the amount of rainfall this year has been an important factor of the increasing level of groundwater in the state. 27 districts have received an excess in rainfall and the remaining six have recorded optimum level of downpour.
