Telangana placed at the bottom in combating climate change

HYDERABAD: Telangana has a lot to do in terms of its efforts to combat climate change due to its below par score of 43/100, according to a recent study by NITI Aayog. Nine other states are lagging behind taking proactive measures in combating adverse climate events.

Findings of study– The report by NITI Aayog on Sustainable Development Goals was released this year on the values of 2020. The other nine states which scored below 50 score are Rajasthan, Goa, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar. These scores are assigned based on a range of indicators such as minimising CO₂ emissions, effective disaster management system, use of renewable energy resources and regulation of air pollution.

Climate experts said that there is widespread misconception that only coastal states, or those which are prone to cyclones, are at a worrisome stage. Dr Harsh Sarma, Director, Centre for Public Policy, Administrative Staff College of India, said that climate change is not limited to coastal areas and there should be a district-level study on climate change related issues.
