HYDERABAD, Telangana: The drinking water crisis in Telangana is deepening as the state witnesses a deficit water supply of about 26 million litres daily. Telangana requires 1398.5 MLD of drinking water to meet its daily requirement, and the government can supply only 1371 MLD. The remaining 26.31 MLD will be sourced from reservoirs and dams.
Officials informed that 67 municipalities in the state are facing drinking water shortages due to depleting water resources. These municipalities are receiving less than 100 LPCD. Another 27 towns receive 135 LPCD, and 48 civic bodies get 100-135 LPCD. The Telangana irrigation department has also sought help from the neighbouring state Karnataka to provide water to Gadwal and other households in the old Mahbubnagar district.
Officials further informed that ₹100 crore to each district and ₹1 crore to every assembly constituency were given to meet their drinking water requirements. Around 23,800 rural households are being supplied drinking water under Mission Bhagiratha. Also, water tankers are being provided to civic bodies with acute water shortages.
