CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu is awarded top position in ‘Best State’ category under National Water Awards (NWAs) 2019, given by Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. Second and third position was awarded to Maharashtra and Rajasthan.
The NWA is presented in a total of 16 categories including Best State, Best District, Best Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body (ULB), Best Research/Innovation/Education and technology, etc. The press release said that each category has different sub-categories in different zones of the country.
Tamil Nadu bagged other awards under the category of Best District in South. Vellore and Karur were awarded first and second spot under ‘Revival of River’ sub-category. Perambalur district is awarded second position in the category of ‘Water Conservation’. Sasthavinathur Village Panchayat, Thoothukudi bagged the first spot in the ‘Water Conservation’ category for south. Madurai Municipal Corporation bagged the top spot in ‘Best ULB’ category.
Hari Kuppuswamy, Indian Council of Agricultural research (ICAR)- Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore; T Pradeep, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) and Va Tech Wabag Ltd bagged first, second and third spot under ‘Best Research/Innovation/Adaptation of New Technology for Water Conservation’ category.
The award ceremony will be held on November 11 and 12, virtually.
