ANDAMAN & NICOBAR ISLANDS: Bhupender Yadav, Minister of Environment, Government of India, mentioned in the Lok Sabha that around 9.6 lakh trees are likely to be felled for the Great Nicobar Island Project during the ongoing budget session in the Parliament. In October 2022, the central government approved an infrastructure project worth Rs 72,000 crore. This project entails the diversion of approximately 130.75 sq km of forest land on the environmentally sensitive Great Nicobar Island.
