Atishi asks Chief secy to urgently review water supply issues across Delhi NEW DELHI: Amid complaints of water shortage in some areas of the national capital, Atishi Marlena Singh, water minister and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) chairman, asked the chief secretary to urgently reassess water supply in all parts of the city. In her letter to the top bureaucrat, Atishi said, “It has been brought to my notice that there is reduction in water production and water shortage in many parts of Delhi. This is an extremely critical and urgent matter. The people of Delhi cannot be allowed to suffer. I am attaching an illustrative (not exhaustive) list of areas from which I have been receiving frequent complaints.” The minister also sought a plan of action for supplementing the existing water supply system with borewells and a detailed plan for water tankers required for each of the areas experiencing shortage in water supply in the summer months. Notably, days after his arrest, Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal has issued directions asking the water minister to resolve sewer and water problems in the city in an expeditious manner. He had asked the minister to issue strict directions to the chief secretary and DJB officials to ensure people not to face any problems during summer. “I might be in jail, but people of Delhi shouldn’t be inconvenienced,” Kejriwal said. Issuing orders to Atishi, the Chief Minister had said, “I have come to know that there are significant water and sewer problems in some areas of Delhi. I might be in jail, but people shouldn’t be inconvenienced.” “Make adequate arrangements for water tankers so that there is no shortage during summers. Give appropriate instructions to the Chief Secretary and DJB officials so that people do not face any kind of inconvenience during summer. Immediate and proper resolution of public problems should be ensured. If necessary, seek the cooperation of the Lieutenant Governor as well. He will surely assist you.”

Delhi presents budget 2024-25 NEW DELHI: The Delhi government presented the budget for the financial year 2024-25 in the state assembly, with an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore. Atishi Singh, Minister of Finance, government of Delhi, mentioned that the Delhi government has continued its focus on education, health, power and roads among others in this budget as well. In her maiden budget speech, Atishi stated that the population of Delhi accounted for only 1.55 per cent of the country’s population, yet its contribution to the National Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is more than double that figure. Atishi proposed an allocation of Rs 16,396 crore for the education sector, where Rs 100 crore has been allocated to the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) for training teachers, and another Rs 150 crore for the construction of new schools and classrooms. She further proposed Rs 45 crore for the maintenance of existing classrooms and Rs 42 crore for Schools of Specialised Excellence. The budget further mentioned of a new initiative, “Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana” in which women above 18 years of age will be given Rs 1000 every month. Rs 2000 crore have been allocated for the scheme. ”Be it a college student wanting to buy books or a woman wanting to watch a movie, she will not have to ask anyone for money,” Atishi stated. To be eligible, the woman, above the age of 18, will have to be a voter in Delhi should not be filing income tax and should not be a beneficiary of any other government pension scheme. The finance minister added that strengthening of roads had enabled the development of the national capital and that the Arvind Kejriwal-led government intended on delivering integrated corridors, three double decker flyovers in collaboration with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and eight new flyovers by the end of 2024-25. An outlay of Rs 510 crore for the e-buses and Rs 500 crore for Delhi metro has been announced. “The Aam Aadmi Party government also plans to lay down 1,000 kms of road in the villages of the capital and the removal of dark spots all across the city," the minister said. While mentioning about the health sector, the finance minister stated that the Delhi government has allocated a budget of Rs 8,685 crore for this sector. This includes funds for hospitals, medical treatment through Mohalla Clinics, essential medicines and the construction and expansion of healthcare facilities. Overall, the budget focuses on improving education, empowering women, and enhancing healthcare facilities.
