SYDNEY: The recent Australian bushfires have led to the city of Sydney being covered in a dense haze. It is reported that the air quality there is “extremely toxic”, making the city breath “hazardous’ air. AQI, in some parts of the city, has reportedly exceeded 200. Various offices in the downtown area of Sydney have been evacuated and city ferries have been cancelled as of now. The dense haze of smoke has also significantly brought down visibility in the city.
Locals have described the situation as “apocalyptic” and “insane”. Meanwhile, local health officials have issued a health advisory to people, urging them to stay indoors and avoid any outdoor activity. The number of daily respiratory-related calls received have also increased, said Brent Armitage, head of New South Wales Ambulance.
Weather forecasts have showed that winds were expected that could clear the air but also fan the brush fires.
