KOLKATA: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s (KMC) 2022-2023 budget proposed the highest allocation of funds to the solid waste management department of the city; the water supply and roads department lands on the second and third position on the allocation list, respectively.
The fund allocation has been planned in such a way that daily operations of the departments are carried out easily and new projects will be launched after proper allocation of funds only, KMC officials reported. An official from KMC said that these funds are directed towards the capacity enhancement of water treatment plants and the construction of more such plants. Mayor Firhad Hakim handed out a Rs 4410 crore budget with Rs 177 crore deficit. During his speech, he mentioned launching waste segregation at the source for all 144 wards in the city.
Furthermore, while talking with the news persons, he said that the civic body would enter into an agreement with a company to improvise mastic asphalt roads in many parts of Kolkata in order to ensure durability of roads that sustains for at least a decade. The solid waste management department was given Rs 667 crore in the current year, according to the budget paper. The department’s amended budget for 2021-22 was Rs 624 crore. The water supply department has been allocated Rs 415 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23. The department was given Rs 382 crore in the revised estimate for 2021-22. For the fiscal year 2022-23, the roads department has been granted Rs 340 crore. The department has been given a budget of Rs 290 crore for the years 2021-22.
