NEW DELHI: The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) released a report named ‘Roadmap for Implementation of Water-Sensitive Design and Planning in Uttar Pradesh: Stormwater Harvesting in Parks and Open Spaces’. The report has been published in collaboration with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India.
The report highlights measures to prevent urban flooding by stormwater harvesting. Releasing the report at an online event titled Water-sensitive Urban Design and Planning: Approach, Challenges and Potential, Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director-General, NMCG, described the content of the report as guidelines to protect urban wetlands.
Mentioning the Namami Gange Mission, he said that it focuses on propagating urban planning that leads to River Sensitive Cities. Furthermore, he suggested that urban planners should utilize urban water bodies and incorporate them in the city’s development plans.
The report mentioned that few cities of Uttar Pradesh such as Lucknow, Varanasi, and Kanpur, can use the system of stormwater harvesting in public spaces to better handle floods and other such natural calamities.
