LUCKNOW: The State Solid Waste Management Committee has ordered Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) to clean solid and biochemical waste from sections of Ghaila village situated on the banks of Gomti river within three days. Justice D P Singh, committee head and Rajendra Singh, member of committee jointly declared the decision. Committee directed LMC to use ‘bioremediation’ process which is a purely scientific method to clean the site. LMC has dumped nearly 20 lakh metric tonnes of garbage in Ghaila village. Local residents face a lot of health problems due to polluted environment.

Bioremediation is a process used to treat contaminated media, including water, soil and subsurface material, by altering environmental conditions to stimulate growth of microorganisms and degrade the target pollutants.

Justice Rajendra Singh said, “Experts have directed LMC about bioremediation process because this is less expensive and more sustainable than other remediation alternatives. The LMC has already spoiled Ghaila but now it has to undertake scientific biological treatment of the area for future generations.”

The Solid Waste Management Committee was constituted last year on October 14, 2018 on the orders of NGT to improve the solid waste management in Uttar Pradesh.
