NEW DELHI: Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India, said that certain districts in some states are showing signs of community transmission but ‘this is not the case across the country’. He added that in different areas across various states, community transmission of COVID-19 is expected, especially in densely populated areas.
Dr Vardhan answered the questions during his social media interaction, ‘Sunday Samvad’, regarding the states witnessing community transmission. He responded to the remark made by Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister, Government of West Bengal, that the state is witnessing instances of community transmission of COVID-19. Government of India has maintained the fact that there is just localized transmission limited to some of the areas that are recording sudden surge in cases. The central government has said that all the strategies to contain the infection are intended to limit the community transmission.
Around 79 per cent of the total 61,871 cases on Saturday, October 17, were detected from just 10 states. Moreover, while the total active caseload of the country has dropped below 8 lakh, just three states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala have more than 50,000 cases each.
