CHENNAI: Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, launched the ‘reverse vending machine’ also called as “smart dustbins” promoted by Golden Star Innovations at his Greenways Road residence in Chennai on January 31. These smart dustbins will generate coupons based on the quantity of the plastic waste dropped in it.
D Sekar, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board Member said, “We are now working on the details. The idea is that coupons would have details where they could be exchanged for offers would be worked out soon.”
The installation of the smart bin is to promote behavioral
attitude and promote people to use dustbins and you could find these bins in
commercial complexes like cinema halls, bus terminals and railway stations. Each
of the unit costing between Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, could store upto 2,500
plastic bottles.
The Chief Minister has advised to install these units in places with high
footfalls such as malls and transport terminals. “This way we would promote a
responsible way of disposing plastic waste,” he added.
