NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) had offered to help all the Durga Pooja committees in immersion of idols by constructing artificial ponds in their neighbourhood parks. The decision to build artificial ponds was taken after a meeting with the monitoring committee formed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for cleaning of the river Yamuna.

The horticulture and the engineering department have received instructions from the SDMC to contact and help the Durga Pooja organizers.

SDMC had granted ‘No Objection Certificates’ (NOC) to 11 committees for setting up pooja pandals in the areas of south Delhi this year.

The civic agency will contact all the organizers to make the arrangements from digging the pond and filling it up after immersion.

An SDMC official said that synthetic paints, clothes, and other items which are used for decorating the idol are the major causes of river pollution. Henceforth, it will be mandatory from next year to seek permission from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee for setting up the pandals.
