NEW DELHI: Residents of Chander Nagar, Janakpuri were in for a shock on December 5, morning. When they went out to hand over their household garbage they were given notices asking why a penalty of Rs 200 shouldn’t be imposed on them for not segregating waste.

This is the first time that South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has issued such notices since the notification of Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. In the past two days, 75 challans have been issued in Janakpuri Ward 15 and 16 in areas like Narang Colony, Chander Nagar, Janakpuri A5B-Block, C4E-Block and C2D-Block. The exercise will soon be conducted in other zones.

The solid waste management rules have a provision of Rs 200 per day fine on households, Rs 10,000 on marriage/party halls and Rs 5,000 on clubs, pubs, cinema halls, etc for not segregating garbage.
