NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Tuesday, July 16, stated that greening of the Okhla landfill site is nearly complete and the height of the landfill has been reduced from 58 m to 38 m.
Under the supervision of an expert from IIT Delhi, the Corporation workers started the process of green capping of the over-saturated landfill site in March 2018. As of now, 70 per cent of the restructuring of the landfill has been completed and grass has been planted over 7,000 sqm of area.
Ramesh Verma, additional commissioner, said that eventually the height of the landfill will be reduced to 30 m. Around 58 workers are employed in two shifts over the past 10 months to complete the project.
One of the major challenges faced by the corporation workers was the stabilisation of the landfill. The process involved the construction of a 16 m sloped road around the landfill site and bringing various slopes of the structure to a 22° angle.
The SDMC proposed a plan to use treated water for maintaining the grass from the Okhla waste water treatment plant. The south corporation is in the process of setting up a new landfill to manage its waste and another waste-to-energy facility. The Delhi Government has not yet given the permission to the SDMC to set up the new landfill due to issues over cutting of trees.
