NEW DELHI: The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) undertook a special sanitation drive to check littering in 167 markets in its jurisdiction on December 27, 2018. The body issued 343 challans in total against traders, with maximum violations from the south zone, says municipal corporation.

Rajiv Kumar Jain, superintendent engineer and nodal officer for Swachh Bharat Mission said, “Maximum 187 challans have been issued in south zone, 74 challans in central zone, another 49 in west zone and minimum 33 in Nazafgarh zone.”

Under such “chit challans”, the violator is supposed to be present in the court of magistrate and has to pay the fine decided in the court in cash.

This comes as part of special “theme-based sanitation drives” that Commissioner Puneet Goel has directed the Department of Environmental Services to undertake daily. They are expected to help the corporation improve its ‘Swachhta Ranking’. Prior to this, the corporation had undertaken sanitation drives which focused on cleaning religious places and efforts to reduce air and dust pollution.
