MUMBAI: The Supreme Court berated the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai for deferring installation of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) to avoid discharge of sewage into the water body and completely disregarding orders from apex court along with the orders from National Green Tribunal.
The bench confessed dissatisfaction with this carelessness at the part of MCMG. The bench said that the civic body cannot leave the fate of citizens’ well-being to its inaction and lethargy. They further stated that MCMG has shown no commitment towards the completion of the project and further seems oblivious towards the remaining situation. Deferment of the work on their part has escalated the project cost. The civic body has been entrusted with the public revenues and rectification of the issue is expected at the earliest from the Municipal body.
Moreover, while seeking an affidavit from MCMG on timeline of the progress made, the bench directed to conduct regular review meetings. Overviewing status of tenders, steps which are being taken or are underway, also assessing the timeframe of completion of work, and assign tasks and roles for timely completion of work.
