SALEM: With just a day left for State to implement ban on single-use plastic, the Salem Municipal Corporation has gone all out to celebrate a plastic-free New Year.
The corporation has installed plastic waste collection boxes in 909 identified spots in the city on December 30.
The boxes have been installed in the Corporation’s main offices, in the four zones of Ammapet, Hasthampatti, Kondalampatti and Suramangalam, bus stands, railway stations and other public places.
R. Sadheesh, Commissioner, Salem Municipal Corporation, inaugurated the plastic wastes collection campaign near the Head Post Office at the old bus stand. He said that plastic waste collection boxes had been kept in 201 places in Suramangalam zone, 208 in Hasthampatti zone, 260 in Ammapet zone and 240 places in Kondalampatti zone.
He also encouraged public to deposit plastic waste, including stock of plastic bags and other materials at their household by getting in touch with the Corporation authorities; the same instruction was given to shops and hotel owners. He said that the corporation would send vehicles and collect the plastic waste piled up.
