SALEM: The Salem Municipal Corporation has announced that it will stop collecting bio-degradable waste from bulk waste generators from January 1, 2020. R Sadheesh, Commissioner, SMC said that the decision was taken as per the solid waste management rules 2016. On September 24, the corporation held a meeting with bulk generators like schools, colleges, hoteliers, restaurant owner’s factory and industry owners to explain them about the guidelines mentioned in the SWM 2016. The bulk generators were then directed by the corporation to set up biogas plants in their vicinity to process biodegradable waste.

If the bulk generators don’t have space to build biogas plant in their vicinity then they can give their waste to the NGO nominated by the SMC, who will run micro composting center for waste processing. The bulk generators were directed to give waste to the NGO nominated by SMC for which they will charged a nominal amount for the service, said the commissioner.

The corporation has said that the generator need a space of 10 sqft in their vicinity to setup the plant and they can ask for technical assistance from the corporation.

Currently, the corporation is collecting nearly 400 metric tonnes of waste daily across the city, which segregated into degradable and non-degradable waste. Then the degradable waste is taken to 13 micro composting plants in the city to turn it into manure.
