Salem Corp. to collect e-waste in phased manner

NEW DELHI: R Sadheesh,Commissioner, Salem Corporation has launched an initiative to collect electronic waste from its the areas in it jurisdiction by partnering with Leela Traders, a licensed e-waste recycler. The Commissioner launched the e-waste collection programme on December 18.

According to officials, the programme will help collect e-waste from the 60 wards. The collection process will be carried out in a phased manner.

In a release, the Corporation stated that the e-waste generated at government and private offices, IT firms, hospitals, banks, and households like lights, mobiles, batteries, computer monitors, and other devices would be collected by the Corporation and will be sent to the recycler. The waste would then be recycled or disposed in a safe manner.

The first phase of the project will focus on collection of e-waste from the government offices, Corporation schools and primary health centres.The second phase, would see collection from educational institutions and private hospitals. The release said that e-waste collection centres would be set up at all four zonal offices of the Corporation.

The Corporation officials have advised the people not to dump e-waste in the regular bins and hand them over at the collection centres or to sanitary workers visiting their residences each day to collect garbage.
