Salary backlog another addition to financial woes of MCD

NEW DELHI: Eight months have passed since the three municipal corporations of New Delhi were merged into the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). But this move hasn’t changed the financial position of the urban local body (ULB) where pending salaries and pension payments stand at around ₹907 crore.

Officials expressed their concerns over unpaid dues as the external revenue sources have shrivelled up and internal sources are insufficient to meet the needs of the local body. After the formation of MCD, the pending dues have been wavering between ₹600 crore to ₹1,200 crore.

The salaries and pensions of the employees are pending for one or two months. An official of the MCD said, “This month, we have paid the salaries of sanitation workers and other Group-D employees with difficulty. We will not be able to pay any more salaries this month unless we get our final instalment of funds for this year from the government.”
